Summer Work
Grade 6
Summer Reading
For the summer assignment read books dealing with the Oregon Trail, Immigration, or the Industrial Revolution. They may be fiction or non-fiction. Please be sure to choose books on your reading level! The library in Belmont has many books set aside for you to pick from. Do not read two books from the same era, for example: have one from the Oregon Trail and one dealing with Immigration.
Here is a list of some possibilities:
Little House on the Prairie -- Wilder
Prairie Songs -- Conrad
Sarah Plain & Tall -- MacLachlan
Skylark -- Maclachlan
A Gathering of Days -- Blos
Caddie Woodlawn --Brink
Beyond the Western Sea -- Avi
So Far From Home -- Denenberg
The Journal of Sean Sullivan -- Durbin
The Journal of Wong Ming Chung -- Yep
Lyddie -- Paterson
Bread & Roses -- Paterson
Counting on Grace -- Winthrop
One of the two books you choose should be about people coming to this country, preferably from the area where your family originally lived before immigrating to this country. The second book may deal with either the Westward Migration (Oregon Trail) or the period of the Industrial Revolution.
On each book do one journal entry. Each entry should include your name, the title, author, additional information about the author, the setting (unless the book is nonfiction), a list of main characters with a brief description of each (unless the book is nonfiction), and a summary of the story or information. Include your favorite part of the book, use a quote and give the page it is on.
You also need to interview one member of your family, the oldest would be best, and write down their comments and bring this in with your journal entries.
Do this early and get it out of the way!
This assignment is due on the first day of school!!
History Day Project
The theme for History Day, 2010 - 2011, is
"Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures Consequences."
Be thinking about what you would like to research for next year’s project!
